Many individuals with ADHD exhibit elevated slow-wave (theta) activity and reduced faster (beta) waves in frontal regions responsible for executive function. Training protocols, such as theta/beta ratio training or sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) enhancement, guide the brain toward normalized patterns that support sustained attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Sessions typically involve 20-40 minutes of focused feedback, where success in producing the desired brainwaves is rewarded, gradually building self-regulation skills.
Research indicates that consistent neurofeedback can lead to improvements in attention span, reduced hyperactivity, better working memory, and enhanced processing speed. Some studies suggest effects may persist after training ends due to neuroplastic changes, unlike medication whose benefits cease upon discontinuation. At our Houston center, we integrate neurofeedback with comprehensive assessments, including QEEG mapping, to track objective changes in brain activity alongside subjective symptom reports. This data-driven method helps patients and families see tangible progress, fostering motivation and long-term adherence to the program.
